Every photo tells two stories: the one it shows, and the one each of us sees.
Some people ask, "Why wasn't I in that photo?" Others ask, "Why did you have to show people THAT photo of me?"
Why does one sibling treasure a photo that another refuses to display?
Why does one person feel forgotten when they're cropped out, while another is grateful they weren't photographed at all?
In this warm, witty, and thought-provoking book, photographer and researcher Tanya A. Perdikoulias explores how photos shape belonging, memory, identity, and family relationships. Drawing on original research, years as a professional family photographer, and hundreds of conversations about family photographs, she reveals what our photos often say with no one speaking a word.
This isn't a book about photography. It's about what happens AFTER the photo is taken. Whether you love being in photos or avoid them whenever you can, What's the Hang-Up? The Art of Family Politics and Photos will forever change the way you look at every photograph, both on your walls and on your phone.
