Each of these leftist causes are sold to the public as temporary solutions to existential threats. But their actual purpose is to vest more control in the federal government and advance the left's partisan objectives at the expense of individual liberty.

The facts around spending are grim. The United States debt continues to rise. We are not cutting nearly enough to make it stop. Entitlement programs continue to grow, and members of Congress who insist that we do something about it are often told that they're "not being team players." The only way to restore sanity is to keep digging, keep paying attention, and keep spreading the message that we need to take responsibility for the money we spend as citizens of the United States. If not, we will be setting up our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren for disaster.
To stop that from happening, citizens should demand that Congress do the following now:
- Make DOGE permanent; publish what they uncovered and what they cut.
- Take steps to stop spending more than we take in, while acknowledging that
- we probably can't do it for decades.
- Eliminate all earmarks and pet-project spending.
- Produce serious committee oversight plans that are focused on real problems.
- Close the Department of Education.
- Find more agencies that need to be defunded, returning the United States to rule by "democracy" instead of "bureaucracy."
These steps might seem huge, but they aren't. If nothing else, they are a start. If we're going to begin seriously addressing the spending problem in this country, it will need to start with citizens, not members of Congress. The work Elon Musk did with DOGE was an important and heroic start to this fight. Now the rest of us need to finish it.
But first, we need to wake up and realize that something is wrong.
The rise of socialism--which seems so alluring at first, just like so many terrible ideas from throughout history--will be the death of freedom.

Author Biography
KEN BUCK (WINDSOR, COLORADO) is a former five-term Congressman from Colorado, lawyer, and author of four books, including Crushed: Big Tech's War on Free Speech.
Congressman Buck served as the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law, and also served on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee; the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship; and on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, The Pacific, and Nonproliferation.
Buck learned the value of hard work from his grandfather, who opened a shoe repair store in Greeley in the 1930s. One of three brothers, he worked his way through high school, college, and law school as a janitor, truck driver, furniture mover, and ranch hand.
After law school, Buck worked for Congressman Dick Cheney (R-WY) on the Iran-Contra Investigation and then became a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1990, he joined the Colorado U.S. Attorney's Office where he became the Chief of the Criminal Division.
In 2002, Buck joined Hensel Phelps Construction Co. in Greeley as a business executive. Starting in 2004, Buck was elected Weld County District Attorney three times. He led a staff of more than sixty people with a strong record of criminal prosecution and crime prevention. Under his leadership, the crime rate in Weld County dropped 50%, one of the best records in the country.
Buck is a Christian and a leader in his profession and community. He has volunteered and served on the boards of many important community groups. As District Attorney, Buck brought together community leaders to create the Juvenile Assessment Center. The Center has helped more than two thousand kids and their families get back on the right path in life.
Buck's son Cody graduated from West Point and served in the U.S. Army and his daughter Kaitlin works as a business executive in Colorado.
