In Uncharted Paths, a teacher discovers that the most important lessons of her career were not the ones she taught, but the ones she learned from students and communities around the world.
Praise for Uncharted Paths
"Uncharted Paths invites us to share a teacher's colorful and endearing journey among students she met and the teaching problems she encountered in classrooms across the world. The adventures of this teacher-ambassador are sometimes ironic and often thrilling. As years pass she learns how education happens beyond the seas and in cultures little known to us. Go with her-you'll be glad you did."
-William F. Woods, PhD, Professor Emeritus of English, Wichita State University, author of England in the Age of Chaucer and Chaucerian Spaces
"Lakshmi Kambampati has been a teacher-of math, of her homeland's culture and history, and perhaps most importantly, of what it means to approach the world and the people who live in it with humility, attentiveness, and dignity-for decades. In sharing her powerful story of working in education in diverse communities around the world, Lakshmi is teaching once again-this time, by offering us all an important reminder that global understanding is built not through abstraction, but through the lived encounter with one another."
-Russell Arben Fox, PhD, Professor of Political Science, Friends University
"This is the story of a teacher shaped by many experiences inside and outside the classroom: learning that community is both complicated and deeply kind; learning that teaching is less about controlling a classroom and more about standing calmly in the storm; learning that students carry personal histories and narratives into every classroom; and recognizing that learning itself can become an act of hope.
Part memoir and part meditation on teaching, this book invites readers into the heart and soul of a global educator's journey-and offers a powerful reminder that, wherever we come from, we are bound together by our shared capacity for learning, resilience, and grace."
-Jeremy Gallegos, PhD, Professor of Philosophy & Ethics, Friends University
"As a principal, I've learned that the most important work in education isn't the lesson plan-it's the connection we build with students. In Uncharted Paths, Lakshmi Kambampati shares a journey that stretches across continents, from classrooms in Wichita to communities in Liberia, India, Tanzania, and the Caribbean. Her stories remind us that great teaching begins with listening, understanding, and meeting students where they are. This memoir is a powerful reflection on how education, at its heart, is about human connection-and the quiet moments when a student finally feels seen."
-Eric Filippi, Principal, Heights High School, Wichita, Kansas
