by Charles Colcock Jones (Author)
The Religious Instruction Of The Negroes In The United States is a historical book written by Charles Colcock Jones in 1842. The book explores the religious beliefs and practices of African American slaves in the United States during the early 19th century. Jones, a Presbyterian minister and slave owner, believed that it was important to provide religious instruction to slaves in order to improve their moral character and obedience to their masters. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the religious beliefs and practices of African American slaves, including their conversion to Christianity, their participation in religious services, and their use of music and dance in worship. The second part of the book focuses on the methods used to instruct slaves in the Christian faith, including the use of catechisms, hymns, and sermons. Jones also describes the challenges and obstacles faced by slave owners in providing religious instruction to their slaves, such as resistance to Christianity and the fear of slave uprisings. The final part of the book discusses the benefits of providing religious instruction to slaves, including the improvement of their moral character and obedience to their masters, as well as their spiritual growth and salvation. Jones argues that providing religious instruction to slaves is not only a moral obligation, but also a practical necessity for maintaining order and stability on plantations. Overall, The Religious Instruction Of The Negroes In The United States provides a fascinating insight into the religious beliefs and practices of African American slaves during the early 19th century, as well as the attitudes and beliefs of slave owners towards providing religious instruction to their slaves. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
