You are already ceremonial. You don't need religion, expertise, or permission to create meaningful ritual you simply need to remember how.
From birth to death, and all the seemingly invisible moments in between, Ritual Without Religion offers a path back to something deeply human: the capacity to weave meaning into our lives and build communities of care along the way. Part storytelling, part guidebook, this book walks you through how to design rituals and ceremonies that are uniquely your own whether you're planning a wedding, navigating a divorce, marking a retirement, welcoming a child, or grieving a loss. It addresses both life's biggest rites of passage and the daily transitions we so often move through unmarked. This isn't a book about grand gestures; it's an invitation to start small, with moments of intentionality that build over time and strengthen our ritual muscles.
The book unfolds across four sections: The Nature of Ritual explores why humans have always turned to ceremony, and why that instinct hasn't gone anywhere even as religion has receded from many lives. The Science of Ritual draws on neuroscience and psychology to explain what ritual actually does for our brains and nervous systems in times of change. The Art of Ritual hands you the tools symbol, intention, repetition, witness to begin designing ceremonies of your own. Finally, The Practice of Ritual grounds it all in daily life, showing how small, repeatable acts of meaning can anchor us just as powerfully as the big milestones.
Humanist celebrant Megan Sheldon draws on anthropology, mythology, and years of experience as an end-of-life doula to show why ritual works and how to make it your own. Megan is the co-founder of Be Ceremonial, the world's first guided ritual platform, and has created hundreds of ceremonies for people around the world a practice that began after her own experience with recurrent pregnancy loss.
With a foreword by Jessie Harrold, and praise from Bruce Feiler, New York Times bestselling author of Life Is in the Transitions and A Time to Gather, who calls Megan "one of the most inventive ritual designers working anywhere in the world today".
Whatever change or transition you are moving through, Ritual Without Religion will offer you ideas and inspiration on how to mark it with meaning. Throughout the book, Megan reminds us that ritual has never belonged to any one tradition. It belongs to all of us.
