In a time when targeted violence, stalking, radicalization, and mass harm feel overwhelming and "unpredictable," Predators, Posers, and Pained Personalities: Defensible and Effective Strategies to Prevent Targeted Violence and Manage Malevolent Behaviors offers a grounded counterpoint, we may not be able to predict who will commit violence, but we can recognize patterns, manage risk, and build systems that save lives while respecting dignity, ethics, and due process.
Although this book was written with violence prevention and threat assessment professionals in mind, it is intentionally practical and accessible for anyone who cares about preventing harm and saving lives, including moms, dads, caregivers, family members, friends, educators, and community leaders. Whether you work in a school, a hospital, a corporate office, a house of worship, public safety, or you are simply someone who wants to better understand how violence can be recognized and reduced, this book is designed to meet you where you are.Blending research, real world experience, and practical wisdom, the authors begin with the human side of the work, what it means to carry the weight of prevention, to battle imposter syndrome, and to build resilience in a field where the stakes are always high. From there, they trace the history of Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM), showing how the discipline evolved from early roots in the 1990s to today's increasingly complex threat landscape, and where it must go next.
The book then moves into the day to day realities of practice. It explores the mindset and guiding principles that shape effective assessment, emphasizing curiosity, compassion, and the reminder that people are more than a moment in time. Readers are taken inside BTAM teams across K to 12 schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, corporate workplaces, retail environments, houses of worship, and fusion centers, with concrete guidance on how these teams can function in a coordinated, defensible way.
Core concepts such as the meandering pathway to violence, observable behavioral indicators, dynamic and static risk enhancers, and cultures of empowered reporting are translated into plain language. The authors tackle complex topics, emotions and violence, mental health and misdiagnosis, the targeted triad of mass violence, intimate partner violence, and self directed violence, the impact of media and technology, violent extremism and inceldom, stalking of both private individuals and public figures, and make them manageable for readers who need clarity, not jargon.
Later chapters focus on the hard work of making BTAM sustainable, securing leadership buy in, navigating organizational resistance, proving concept and return on investment, managing bias and ethical dilemmas, and working within legal and regulatory frameworks. The book closes with practical guidance on documentation and record keeping, and a forward looking call for professional standards in BTAM, anchored in the authors' C.A.S.T.(TM) framework.
Written in an accessible, conversational style, this book is both a foundational text and a practical field guide for anyone tasked with, or simply passionate about, preventing violence in schools, campuses, workplaces, healthcare settings, or communities. It is meant for the multidisciplinary teams and caring individuals who sit in the gray areas, make hard calls, and quietly keep people safe.
