When the Same Conversation Keeps Going Nowhere
Every teacher and school counselor knows the talk that changes nothing. You explain what is at stake, you are clear and you are right, the student nods, and a week later you are having the same conversation again. The problem is rarely effort or care. It is method, because telling a young person why they should change is one of the least reliable ways to help them do it.
A Practical Way to Talk With Students About Change
This guide shows how to use motivational interviewing, a respected and evidence-based conversation style, in the real conditions of a school day. You will learn to ask questions that open students up rather than shut them down, to hear the moment a student begins arguing for their own change, and to respond so that the motivation comes from the student rather than from you. The same skills apply across disengagement, chronic absence, behavior incidents, and tense parent meetings.
What Makes This Book Different
Most resources address clinicians, or counselors by themselves. This one is written for classroom teachers and school counselors together, in plain language, with no prior training assumed. It is organized around the conversations that fill an actual school day and adapts the method to the time educators really have, including brief exchanges that last only seconds. You will find a clear four-part framework, grade-level examples, worked cases, and honest discussion of what the research does and does not support, along with specific adaptations for neurodivergent students.
Who This Book Is For
This book is for readers who teach at any grade level and want conversation tools that move students rather than entrench them; for school counselors, social workers, and psychologists who need a method suited to high caseloads; for staff who support behavior, attendance, or engagement and want a shared language across a building; and for those who train or lead colleagues and want a practical foundation in student-centered conversation.
