There are moments in this hobby when the veil between worlds feels especially thin, when the dice fall just right, the story takes on a life of its own, and imagination becomes something you can almost touch. Mad Scribe Magazine Issue #13 is one of those moments. This issue is a celebration of legend, chaos, craft, and the ever-evolving heartbeat of tabletop gaming.
We begin by reaching beyond the realms themselves with an extraordinary interview with the legendary Ed Greenwood, known to many as the mind behind the Forgotten Realms and, to some, as Elminster himself. It is a rare privilege to speak with a living pillar of the hobby, and his insights into magic, storytelling, and wonder remind us why fantasy still matters.
From there, we explore what happens when magic doesn't quite go as planned. Our feature on serving spells with a side of chaotic after-effects dives into the beauty of unpredictability, the kind of wild arcane energy that can turn victory into glorious disaster in a heartbeat. History also takes center stage as Jack Dawe schools us on the medieval origins of goblin-kin, unearthing how myth, fear, and folklore shaped the creatures we still roll against today.
For those who love to tinker with mechanics, we introduce a D&D house rule gaining traction in some circles, one that just may add a sharp new edge to your combat encounters. If preparation time is your true nemesis, Blaise Krall comes to the rescue with a masterclass on improvising a one-shot session with zero prep, proving that great games can spring from nothing but nerve and creativity.
Fear has a home here, too. John Deathcall shares a chilling personal nightmare and reveals the secret art of truly scaring your players. I also weigh in on the growing impact of virtual tabletops and A.I. on our hobby, what it means, what it threatens, and how we can ride the wave instead of being swept under it.
This issue also welcomes the stunning and multi-talented Victoria Racchione, prima ballerina, CrossFit expert, daytime law office professional, and nighttime cosplay goddess, whose passion bridges worlds as effortlessly as any portal spell.
