Guy's and St Thomas' are two of the UK's oldest and most distinguished medical centres and key players in the local and global landscape of healthcare. This book offers a rich and holistic account of the history of the hospitals and associated institutions from 1948 to 2010. Caring in an Age of Reform presents the revealing and fascinating story of the impact of the wider social, political and economic frameworks on the institutions over the period. It shows how change has been complex, persistent, and unpredictable, reshaping the everyday work of caring for the sick, training health professionals, and pursuing scientific and medical research. Over the decades, generations of staff and alumni have remained steadfast in caring for patients and this constancy has enabled Guy's and St Thomas' to survive and thrive and look forward to the future with hope and optimism.
