The FBI that failed on 9/11 is the creation and captive of its spectacular and controversial past. Powers, who attended new-agent training classes at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, was granted access to restricted FBI facilities. Powers did not set out to write a muckraking attack, and he gives the Bureau its due for many triumphs. Richard Gid Powers is a historian and author of numerous books including Secrecy and Power: The Life of J. Edgar Hoover and G-Men: Hoover's FBI in American Popular Culture. He holds a Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University and is a professor of history at the College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center, CUNY.
