by Alexander Falconbridge (Author)
An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa by Alexander Falconbridge is one of the most powerful firsthand condemnations of the Atlantic slave trade ever written. Originally published in 1788, this harrowing narrative draws on Falconbridge's experience as a British surgeon aboard slave ships operating between West Africa and the Caribbean.
Falconbridge exposes the inhuman conditions endured by enslaved Africans during capture, transport, and sale. His vivid descriptions of overcrowded ships, brutal treatment, and the psychological and physical suffering of the captives stand as a searing indictment of a system built on greed and cruelty. The author's testimony played a key role in fueling the growing abolitionist movement in Britain and helped bring about widespread awareness of the horrors of the transatlantic trade.
A landmark in humanitarian literature, An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa remains an essential document for understanding the realities of slavery, colonial exploitation, and the moral awakening that ultimately led to its abolition.
