In 1607, Powhatan teenager Pocahontas first encountered English settlers when John Smith was brought to her village as a captive. A pioneer in the field of women's history and a leading feminist biographer, Susan Ware is the author and editor of numerous books on twentieth-century U.S. history. She currently serves as general editor of the American National Biography, and was designated Senior Advisor to the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard.
