Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of the \u003ci\u003eLondon Times. \u003c\/i\u003eHe began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, \u003ci\u003eOrient Express, \u003c\/i\u003ein 1932.
