Educated at Cambridge and at Princeton, from which he graduated summa cum laude, he is Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine, where he was the Director of the Graduate Fiction Program from 1995 to 2006. Previously, he served on the faculties of Istanbul University and Princeton University and has been a book editor at the \u003ci\u003eWashington Post\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eNewsweek\u003c\/i\u003e.
