His love of hockey started as a youth in Warroad, Minnesota, where he played for Warroad High School. While serving in the US Army, he joined the national ice hockey team. In 1971, he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings and was voted Detroit rookie of the year in his first full NHL season.
